What to Expect During Your Eye Exam

Because prescription glasses are custom made for you based on your vision, eye health, and personal preferences, it’s important to have an eye exam prior to purchasing them so we can get every element just right. Not only can prescription glasses improve vision, but also they can help to relieve eye strain, decrease eye fatigue and alleviate headaches. At iCare Vision, we will walk you through a series of tests to address any issues you may be experiencing, such as:

  • sudden or gradual changes in vision
  • blurred vision
  • spotty vision
  • eye pain or strain
  • recurring headaches

We will then determine the lens option that best meets your needs. Below are just a few examples:

  • single vision to correct either a near or distant vision problem
  • multifocal to correct both near and distant vision problems
  • progressive to correct both near and distant vision problems more smoothly

Whether you want to change your look, update your prescription, or find relief from a recurring problem, we’re looking forward to helping you.

FAQs About Eyeglass Appointments

Do I need an eye exam every year for my glasses prescription?
We recommend our patients with corrective lenses come see us once a year for an annual eye exam. Eyes can change in a shorter period of time, but, on average, once a year is sufficient.

Keep in mind that wearing eyeglasses with an out-of-date prescription can lead to discomfort and vision problems.

How long does an eyeglass prescription last?
Every eyeglass prescription will vary depending on expiration, but most prescriptions are valid for one to two years. This expiration is important because vision can certainly change within that amount of time (making an annual eye exam imperative).

Additionally, the prescription expiration date marks the last day optical shops and labs can legally use the prescription to make glasses that fit your vision needs.

How long does an eye appointment take?
On average, eye exams last 30-60 minutes. It’s important to note that every eye exam duration will vary depending on several factors, such as:

  • If your eyesight requires multiple tests
  • If you have more complex vision issues
  • If the doctor has more to discuss with you
  • If you have several questions that need addressed
  • If your vision needs require subsequent visits
Should I wear my glasses before an eye appointment?
You can wear eyeglasses before an eye appointment. Be sure to not forget them at home, as your eye doctor will want to make sure they still fit correctly and provide the best support. You will need to remove your glasses during the exam.
Is it OK to wear eye makeup to an eye exam?
It’s highly recommended to arrive to your eye exam with no eye makeup on, including eyeliner, eyeshadow or mascara. Some eye tests require eye drops, which mix with the eye makeup, run into your eyes, cause irritation, and disrupt the exam(s).
How do I know if I need an eye test?
If you don’t currently have an eye prescription and don’t wear contacts or eyeglasses, seeing the eye doctor may not seem like a priority. We recommend everyone get a healthy eye exam annually, as your overall health depends on your eye health. Furthermore, if you experience any of these nine signs, consider scheduling an eye exam soon:

  • Your eyes are red, dry, itchy
  • You are seeing spots, flashes of light, or floaters
  • You have diabetes or another health condition that affects your eyes
  • You have a family history of diabetes or glaucoma
  • You have difficulty driving at night and seeing street signs in the dark
  • You experience eye strain, headaches and/or blurred vision after using the computer for an extended amount of time
  • You get motion sick, dizzy, or have trouble following a moving target
  • You hold books or the newspaper further away from your face and squint or close one eye to read clearly
  • You experience a change in your vision

“The optometrist was very patient with my 4-year-old and checked her vision multiple ways to ensure a confident and complete screening. The next appointment was easy to make and my daughter left happy. They did a great job making her feel like a real life princess.”
